Enna

Enna: A City with Many Names

Hello friends, today I'll tell you about a magnificent Italian city located in Sicily. I'm talking about Enna, also known as ''Castruggiuvanni''. This city has a truly fascinating history, and I'll take you on a journey to discover its places of interest, beauty, and unique characteristics. Enna is a city with a population of approximately 25,590 inhabitants and represents the capital of the Enna municipal consortium in Sicily.

Enna was called "Castrogiovanni" or "Castrojanni" until 1927, when it regained its ancient name. This city was defined as ''Urbs Inexpugnabilis'' by Roman history for its impregnability. During its three millennia of history, Enna has been the almost impregnable stronghold of Sicilians, ancient Greece, Roman civilization, Byzantines, Emirate of Sicily, Norman Sicily, Hohenstaufen, and Aragonese. Furthermore, despite often being the target of invasions and disorder, Enna has been able to maintain its culture and its historical heritage.

Physical geography

Enna is located in the highest part of a wide mountain ridge, which towers over the Dittaino valley at an altitude of 931 meters. The hills surrounding Enna belong to the Erei mountain range, limestone and sandstone mountains that are not particularly high, which constitute most of the orography of the province of Enna. The municipality of Enna is among the top 30 largest Italian municipalities: its territory occupies an area of 357.14 km². About 10 km south of the historic center is Lake Pergusa, at 677 m above sea level, which represents an important area for stopping and wintering dozens of bird species. Around the lake's shores is the Pergusa racetrack. Enna is commonly divided into three "macro-areas": Enna Alta and Enna Bassa, to which Villaggio Pergusa is added. All areas are clearly separated from a geographical point of view.

Enna: between history and nature in the heart of Sicily.

Enna Alta

Enna Alta is located on a plateau between 900 and 990 meters above sea level, isolated in the center of the Erei, dominating the Dittaino valley to the east and the Salso valley to the west. The Enna plateau has an irregular triangular shape: the northern and western slopes are the steepest and most rugged, with cliffs up to 400 meters high on the valleys below. Enna Alta is characterized by many points of interest, including the Castle of Lombardy, the Tower of Frederick II, the Cerere Fortress, and the Enna Cathedral. These historic monuments reveal the millennia-old history of this city.

Enna Bassa

Enna Bassa is located at the foot of the plateau and extends along the Dittaino valley. In this area, there are many residential and commercial areas, as well as important public facilities and essential services; important archaeological sites of great interest can also be found here, such as the Realmese Necropolis. Enna Bassa offers visitors the opportunity to discover the daily life of the city and its modern aspects.

Villaggio Pergusa

Villaggio Pergusa is a fraction of the municipality of Enna located near the lake of the same name. It represents one of the most picturesque areas of the city, thanks to the beauty of the lake and the surrounding natural heritage, with the presence of numerous bird species that nest and migrate in this area.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Enna is a city that combines history and modernity, between natural landscapes, artistic and cultural heritage, as well as the hospitality of its inhabitants. A visit to Enna becomes an unforgettable experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of central Sicily. Thanks to its geographical position, Enna represents a great opportunity for anyone who wants to discover the authentic Italy.
