Due Cossani
The Story of Due Cossani
The hamlet of Due Cossani is located northwest of the town center of Dumenza, in the province of Varese. However, in the past, this territory was part of an ancient municipality in the province of Milan: Cossano. Recorded in 1751, Cossano was a village with 172 inhabitants located in the Valtravaglia parish three years later. Over time, it passed through different administrations: from the province of Gallarate to the Austrian province of Varese. With the advent of the Cisalpine Republic, it was included in the department of Verbano, district of Giona (1798). Later, it entered the district of Luino, inserted in the department of Olona, and finally in the VII canton of Maccagno Superiore. In 1809, it was annexed to Agra, in the IV canton of Maccagno of the Varese district, and then reinstated at the beginning of the 19th century.
The Evolution of the Population
Cossano underwent various changes. In 1853, there were 301 inhabitants. In 1863, the municipality was renamed Due Cossani, due to the fact that the stream that descends from Agra divides the territory into two parts: ''Cosan de chi'' and ''Cosan de là'', and then flows into the Colmegnino stream. In 1871, the hamlet counted 289 inhabitants. With the arrival of the 20th century, the population of Due Cossani began to grow: in 1921, there were 385 residents registered.
The Suppression of the Municipality and the Union with Dumenza
The end of the municipality of Due Cossani, however, arrived with the fascist regime in 1928. The government decided to suppress the municipality of Due Cossani and merge it with Dumenza. Since then, the hamlet of Due Cossani has remained a small area within the municipality of Dumenza.
In conclusion, the history of Due Cossani is very interesting. From its origins as the ancient municipality of Cossano, to the name change in 1863 due to the geography of the territory, and finally to its union with Dumenza in 1928. Despite the end of its status as a municipality, Due Cossani remains a very beautiful area of the province of Varese, which is definitely worth visiting.
