Duino

Duino: history and territory

Welcome to Duino, a charming town located in the province of Trieste in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Duino owes its development and history to its two castles, the "old castle" and the "new castle". The area has been inhabited since the late Copper Age, with Lombard settlements and inclusion in the Duchy of Forum Iulii or Friuli.

During the Napoleonic wars, until 1919, Duino was part of the County of Gorizia and Gradisca and subsequently, from 1919 to 1923, of the Province of Gorizia. In 1928, the municipality of Duino was dissolved and merged with other municipalities, forming the new municipality of Duino-Aurisina. In 1947, the municipal territory of Duino Aurisina was assigned to the Free Territory of Trieste, with the exception of the Jamiano fraction which remained in Italy and became part of the province of Gorizia.

The United World College of the Adriatic

Since 1982, Duino has been home to the United World College of the Adriatic, an international school that welcomes students from 80 countries around the world. It is one of 17 campuses of United World Colleges worldwide.

Monuments and places of interest

Duino has a historic center gathered around the castle and crossed by alleys, with the Church of the Holy Spirit from 1591 located near the castle walls. The historic center has a semicircular structure and in ancient times was protected by walls still visible today.

The square in front of the castle has a plaque in memory of the locals who died during World War II and a monument in memory of the peasant revolt of 1713.

Duino Mare is the tourist resort near the historic center, with a small harbor and the bathing establishment known as Bagno Gol. In the nineteenth century, there was also a small industrial plant for fish salting.

To the northwest of Duino is the Nigrignano or Cernizza forest, formerly a hunting reserve for castle residents.
