The history of Dugenta
The history of Dugenta dates back to 823 AD when it was mentioned for the first time. In the 13th century, it was donated by Charles I of Anjou to Guglielmo di Belmonte after being valued at just over forty-two ounces (coin), but then it passed to Sanframondo. In 1439, it was the scene of a bloody battle between King Alfonso V of Aragon and Jacopo Caldora, with the former's victory. In the 16th century, it became the property of Di Capua, Monsorio, Loffredo, and Coscia. In 1648 it was a fief of the Duke of Guisa, and in 1734, Carlo III of Spain passed through it in his advance to conquer the Kingdom of Naples. In 1810 it was annexed to the municipality of Melizzano, but in 1859, there was a first attempt to conquer municipal autonomy. In 1949, the citizens of Dugenta made a new request to obtain the erection of an autonomous municipality, which was accepted with the subscription of the citizens of Dugenta and their commitment to donate half a million lire as a non-reimbursable fund for the first expenses of the new municipality.
