Doberdò del Lago

Welcome to Doberdò del Lago

Hello everyone! Today, I will talk to you about Doberdò del Lago, an Italian municipality located in the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Doberdò is famous above all for its lake, which takes water from underground outlets of nearby rivers and has been declared a nature reserve. A destination not to be missed for nature and photography lovers! But Doberdò is not just a lake. The municipality has an important history linked to World War I, with the Battle of Doberdò involving units of the Kingdom of Italy and those of Austria-Hungary. The battle, also known as "the battle of the peoples", was fought mainly by Slovenian, Hungarian and Transylvanian units, among which the Sassari Brigade stood out, composed of Sardinian soldiers, who became famous for their courage and strength. But Doberdò is not just history. Ethnically, the majority of the population is of Slovenian origin. The Slovenian language is official in the municipality and there are only schools with Slovenian language of instruction. The municipality extends over two hamlets (Italian/Slovenian), Jamiano/Jamlje and Palchisce/Palkišče, and eleven localities among which is remarkable Marcottini/Poljane, which has 135 inhabitants.
