History

Traditions and folklore

One of the most special moments of the year in Dipignano is the celebration of the Sagra del Polentone, an event that takes place every two years in September. The tradition of this festival dates back to the 16th century, when a group of caldron makers from Dipignano approached the Marquis Cristoforo del Carretto, asking for refuge and supplies. In exchange, the caldron makers offered their skill in preparing provisions. Impressed by their ability, the Marquis del Carretto promised the caldron makers, in exchange for the repair of a huge cauldron, to fill it with cornmeal for polenta. Thus began the tradition of the Sagra del Polentone, which culminates in the creation of enormous cauldrons of polenta for the festival.

The Waldensian community

The Waldensian community is actively present in Dipignano, having acquired a church dedicated to St. Hippolytus from the Curia. The church has been restored and used as their own place of worship.
