Melicuccà: hidden treasure of Calabria

Name origins

Melicuccà has a name that probably derives from Greek, and has a history dating back to ancient times. It is thought that in Byzantine times, Melicuccà was an important center in the area. Fleeing the Saracens, many populations moved to Melicuccà, where the "bagolare" (in Greek ''melikokkos'') flourished and abundant springs bubbled up. In this way, the first substantial inhabited nucleus of the town was founded.

History

There is scarce information about the origins of Melicuccà, but the town has a history that dates back to at least the 10th century. In the municipality's territory, the complex of the caves of S. Elia speleota, with the remains of the adjoining Basilian monastery and annexed factories (cellar, mill, necropolis, winery, etc.), represents today one of the most significant archaeological evidence of Byzantine Greek culture in southern Calabria. Melicuccà was founded around the 10th century and it is believed that the settlement of the town can be attributed to the high density of Basilian settlements existing in Byzantine times in the area, which was located in the center of the Turma delle Saline.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Melicuccà dates back to the early 18th century, and the banner was granted in 2009. The coat of arms depicts an olive tree on a blue field while the banner has white and blue colors with the town's coat of arms in the center.

Monuments and places of interest

Religious architecture

Melicuccà is rich in religious architecture that constitutes a heritage of great historical and artistic importance.

The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Melicuccà was built in 1496. Before that date, the protector of Melicuccà was Saint Elijah the Speleota. In the town, there is also the Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, which was built to accommodate the convent of the reformed minor friars of the Venetian province. The church, which is characterized by its spectacular white stone façade, was also the seat of the 17th-century Academy of Sant'Antonio. Finally, there is the Church of Maria Santissima del Rosario. Known as the Church of Consolation until 1569 when the confraternity of the SS. Rosario was founded, the church became one of the four independent commendable churches.

Melicuccà is also surrounded by extraordinary nature, characterized by vast expanses of pine, beech, and chestnut forests, which represent a unique opportunity for trekking and cycling enthusiasts. The town also offers a panoramic view of the beautiful Ionian coast and, on the clearest days, also of the Aeolian Islands.
