The History of Dignano

Dignano, or Dignan in Friulian language, is a municipality in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, with a population of approximately 2,301 inhabitants. The town is known for being the birthplace of Jacopo Pirona, author of the "Vocabolario friulano," as well as his grandson Giulio Andrea Pirona.

The coat of arms of Dignano was granted in 1953 by the President of the Italian Republic. The gonfalon, on the other hand, is a yellow and blue banner which intersect.

Places of interest

Regarding architecture, there are several places of interest in the city. The Church of San Sebastiano was built in the 18th century, while the Pieve dei Santi Pietro e Paolo dates back to the 12th century and is one of the oldest churches in Friuli. In the left nave of the Church, you can admire four 18th-century frescoes. Another place of interest is the Pirona-Bisaro House, dating back to the 16th century and characterized by a facade with four arches in tuff. Here, you can also admire two large 18th-century frescoes.

Society in Dignano

The population of Dignano uses Friulian language as well as Italian. According to the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the municipality is among the Italian municipalities that use Friulian language, in accordance with law no. 482/99, regional law no. 15/96, and regional law no. 29/2007. The Friulian language variant spoken in the city falls under the central-eastern Friulian variants.

Administration

Based on the regional law 26/2014 "Reorganization of the Region System - Local Autonomy of Friuli Venezia Giulia," Dignano is part of the Inter-municipal Territorial Union "Collinare" of Friuli, which is located in San Daniele del Friuli together with the municipalities of Buja, Colloredo di Monte Albano, Coseano, Fagagna, Flaibano, Forgaria nel Friuli, Majano, Moruzzo, Osoppo, Ragogna, Rive d'Arcano, San Daniele del Friuli, San Vito di Fagagna and Treppo Grande.

Sports in Dignano

The city's football team is Asd Tagliamento, which currently plays in the Second Category and was founded in 1970. The official team colors are white and green. In addition to Asd Tagliamento, there is also the amateur team of AC Dignano 1992, which plays in the A group of the First Category of the Lega Calcio Friuli Collinare. The society was founded in 1992.
