Diamond: history, beaches and crystal clear sea in the city of the Riviera dei Cedri.

Origins of the Name

Did you know that the name Diamante, in Calabrian dialect ''Diamàndë'' and in Byzantine Greek ''Diamandè'', seems to be connected with the diamond as a jewel? However, there are no certain sources that explain why such a name was adopted. But there is also a popular legend that tells a really interesting story: it is said that a crow that was about to drink from the stream that runs through the town immediately north of the historic center found a diamond.

History

The history of Diamante is truly fascinating. In fact, there are several historiographic sources that speak of settlements that took place already in the times of the Focesian Greeks and the Roman Civilization. However, the first news about the birth of a real inhabited nucleus in the places of Diamante date back to 1500, when Prince Sanseverino ordered the construction of a defensive position to counter Saracen raids.

Later, the Prince of Bisignano Tiberio Carafa, who was the owner of the territories of Belvedere Marittimo and Diamante already since 1622, built a fortification of the territory around the Sanseverino tower.

After the Turkish raids, the rural population moved to the sea and began to increase commercial traffic. Wealthy Neapolitan, Amalfi and Salernitan traders, and noble families, including those of Spanish origin, settled in Diamante thanks to the position and amenity of the place, giving birth to the inhabited center.

Diamante soon became a decent center for fishing and agriculture thanks to the nourished fleet and the production of the medica citrus, known as ''Cedro liscio diamante''. This particular citrus fruit, large and perfumed, destined mostly for candying, has become famous worldwide also thanks to its link with Jewish communities that select the perfect cedar during Sukkot every summer.

Symbols

Did you know that the coat of arms of the Municipality of Diamante was recognized by decree of the Head of the Government Prime Minister Secretary of State on August 6, 1935? The gonfalon is an azure flag and represents the beauty and history of this city.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Diamante is a city that does not disappoint. Its fascinating history and beautiful beaches make it an ideal destination for a relaxing vacation.
