Ponte Nuovo
Bridges
Hello friends, today I want to tell you about some Italian and non-Italian bridges that are called "Ponte Nuovo". There are many around the world and each one has an interesting story to tell.
The first one I will talk about is the Pont Neuf in Paris, France, one of the most famous bridges in the city. The name "Neuf" means "new" and it was given because it was the first Parisian bridge built entirely of masonry.
In Valle d'Aosta, along the Via Francigena, we find another "Ponte Nuovo" called Pont Neuf di Châtillon. This bridge was built around the 15th century and was a fundamental stop for pilgrims traveling to Rome.
In Venice we can find the "Ponte Novo", which like the Pont Neuf, despite the name "new" is one of the oldest bridges in the city, in fact it was built in 1591.
Ascoli Piceno also has its "Ponte Nuovo", so called because it was built in 1034 after a strong flood damaged the old bridge.
In Ragusa, Sicily, we find the "Ponte Pennavaria" or better known as the "Ponte Nuovo". This bridge was built in 1949 and was named after Senator Pennavaria.
In Lecco and Malgrate, Lombardy, we find the "Ponte John Fitzgerald Kennedy", commonly called "J.F. Kennedy". This suspension bridge over Lake Como spans about 200 meters and connects the city of Lecco to Malgrate.
Also in Syracuse, Sicily, we find another "Ponte Nuovo" called "Ponte Umberto I" built in 1882 to replace the old Roman bridge.
In Verona, Veneto, we find the "Ponte Nuovo del Popolo" that spans the Adige river. This bridge was built in 1955 to facilitate connections between the two parts of the city.
Finally, in Tuscany, we find the "Ponte Nuovo sull'Arno" that connects Lastra a Signa and Signa. This reinforced concrete bridge was built in 1958 to replace the ancient medieval bridge.
Geography
In addition to bridges, there are also several locations that bear the name "Ponte Nuovo".
In Corsica, we find Ponte Nuovo di Castello di Rostino, the site of the Battle of Ponte Nuovo in 1769.
In Umbria, in the town of Deruta, we find the hamlet of "Ponte Nuovo".
There is also a district with this name in Ravenna, as well as in Magenta, in the province of Milan.
Finally, in the province of Perugia, we find the hamlet of Pontenuovo, both in the municipality of Torgiano and in the municipality of Pistoia.
Here are some of the Italian and non-Italian bridges and locations that bear the name "Ponte Nuovo". I hope you enjoyed this curiosity and learned something new. See you next time!
