Deliceto

Deliceto: a small treasure in the Dauni mountains

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a small town in Puglia that maybe many of you don't know: Deliceto. It is located in the province of Foggia and has just over 3500 inhabitants, but it is really a treasure to discover!

Physical geography

Deliceto is located in the southern Dauni mountains and its territory is halfway between the Tavoliere delle Puglie and the Campanian Apennine. Its location makes it particularly suggestive and fascinating. The mountainous landscape is arranged in a horseshoe shape and there are different heights to discover, such as San Quirico, Celezza, Salecchia and Macchione. The territory is characterized by rivers that cross the inhabited area, such as the Gavitello and the Fontana, and by woods of oak trees, Mediterranean scrub, olive groves and vineyards. Here you can find a variety of wild orchids and a rich fauna that takes refuge among the wooded crests.

Climate

Deliceto has a typical high hill climate, with relatively cold winters and mild summers that are not too sultry. In short, a really pleasant climate that will make you feel immediately at ease.

Origin of the name

The name Deliceto has uncertain origins. According to the commonly accepted etymology, the toponym derives from the Latin word ''ilex'', that is Quercus ilex, a tree very common in the area. In any case, the name is perfect for this enchanting place.

History

Origins

The history of Deliceto is not easily datable, but it seems that already in the 8th-9th century A.D., it existed as a settlement. One of the first districts of the inhabited area seems to have been that of Pesco, consisting of caves carved into the front of the Elceto spur.

What to see in Deliceto

If you decide to visit Deliceto, you cannot miss some of the main attractions of the town, such as the Matrice Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Convent of Santa Maria della Consolazione, and the Castle. Furthermore, I recommend walking through the characteristic alleys of the historic center and admiring the numerous noble palaces.
