Deiva Marina

Welcome to Deiva Marina: a town divided between sea and mountains

If you are looking for a town that combines all the beauty of the Ligurian coast with the charm of the mountains, Deiva Marina is the perfect place for you. This municipality, located in the province of La Spezia in Liguria, contains two main parts: the old town and the Marina, a newer area overlooking the sea. Surrounded by hills, including Mount San Nicolao (847 m above sea level), which offers a panoramic view ranging from the coastal area between Sestri Levante and La Spezia to the Apuan Alps, and Mount Pietra di Vasca (801 m), this splendid town offers opportunities for hiking enthusiasts and fishermen who mainly enjoy Palamito fishing.

The history of Deiva Marina

The history of Deiva Marina dates back a long time ago: the first document testifying to settlements in the area dates back to 774, but certainly in the centuries before, a population of Lombard origin had settled in the area. In the following centuries, some of the "valligiani" inhabitants moved towards the coast and built a first village near the sea. Matteo Vinzoni's drawings from 1751 show that the coastal observation tower and some warehouses were already present, but most of the current buildings date back to the post-war period. The entire area was a fiefdom of the local Da Passano family, who built a castle in their honor, and after dedicating to the Republic of Genoa since 1144, they became allies and vassals. The Genoese Republic incorporated Deiva and Mezzema into the podesteria of Moneglia, while Piazza and Passano were part of the podesteria of Framura. From 1680, the territory was incorporated into the only podesteria of Moneglia within the captaincy of Levanto, a jurisdictional situation that remained unchanged until the Napoleonic domination of the late 1700s.
