Discovering the small village of Marseille

Hello friends, today I will tell you about a small village located in the metropolitan city of Genoa, called Marseille. This splendid location at 553 meters above sea level has only 55 inhabitants, but is rich in history and monuments to discover.

History

According to legend, the village was founded by a group of people originally from Marseille, hence the origin of the name. However, the first official mention of the village dates back to 1213, where the presence of a church in the settlement is mentioned. In 1386 the church is indicated as in ruins, but in 1645 the construction of a single-nave church with three altars and a bell tower was completed. In 1600, the parish of Marseille was separated from that of Calvari and became independent. In 1887, the parish was entrusted to three Jesuit priests as a mission and in 1940 it became a provostship.

Marseille: the millenary village between history and beauty.

Curiosities about the village of Canate di Marseille

The village of Canate di Marseille, founded in the twelfth century, was an isolated and abandoned village because it was never reached by caravan roads. Since then, Canate di Marseille has become a sort of "ghost village" that has gained fame for the beauty of its remains and ancient stone houses.

Monuments and places of interest

The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Marseille is the main monument of the village. Built in the thirteenth century and renovated in the following centuries, the interior is composed of three naves and houses some works of art of great value. The church is also equipped with a bell tower that offers a panoramic view of the valley.
