Priacco

Priacco: an ancient village in northern Italy

Priacco is a hamlet of the municipality of Cuorgnè, located in the province of Turin, in Italy. The town, like many others in the region, has an ancient history dating back to Celtic times. The name Priacco means "before the waters", which refers to its position on the right side of the Orco river. Until 1928, Priacco was an autonomous municipality, but then it was incorporated into the municipality of Cuorgnè.

The history of Priacco

Priacco has been known since the establishment of its parish, dating back to very remote times. Pope Innocent VIII confirmed the right of appointment to the priest, lawyer ''Gioanni De Beccutis''. Following the decrees of the Council of Trent, the parish was reduced to perpetual vicariate on March 31, 1650. Priacco was included in the county of Valperga and always belonged to the province and the Diocese of Ivrea.

Discovery of a Roman settlement

In 2006, during the construction of the bypass of the state road 460 of Ceresole, the remains of a Roman settlement were discovered. The discovery, represented by a Roman villa, was not considered important enough to justify a change in plans or a halt to work. The settlement was covered with a non-woven fabric and documented by the archaeology company ''Archiéo'' from Camogli.

The presence of the ruins confirms the presence of humans in the Priacco area already in Roman times.

Conclusions

Priacco is a small village with a long history. The discovery of the Roman settlement represents another piece of the city's history. Despite its small size, Priacco is an interesting destination for those who are passionate about history and want to discover the presence of humans in northern Italy.
