Hi everyone! Today we're talking about Turin, a beautiful city located in the Italian region of Piedmont. With its 842,472 inhabitants, Turin is the fourth most populous municipality in Italy and the heart of a metropolitan area of about 1.7 million inhabitants. In this text, I want to tell you a bit about the city's history and geography, but also share some curiosities about the activities that take place here.

History of Turin

Foundation

Turin has a millennial history: it was probably founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Celtic tribe that settled in the area. At that time, the territory was crossed by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po, which still flow through the city today. Later, Turin was turned into a Roman colony by Augustus at the end of the 1st century BC, with the name of 'Iulia Augusta Taurinorum'.

Discovering Turin: history, geography and curiosity of the Piedmontese city.

Duchy of Turin

After the domination of the Ostrogoths, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy, ruled by the Savoy dynasty, in the 11th century. In 1563 the city officially became its capital, remaining in the hands of the Savoy family until the unification of Italy. In fact, it was Turin that became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) and subsequently, with the independence of the country, became the first capital of the newborn Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865.
