This geographical location made it an important defensive stronghold in history and a bulwark of the Normans, who built a castle and walls there.

Religion has played an important role in the history of Cuccaro Vetere, which was home to the Byzantine monastery of San Nicola di Mira and later, from 1333, a Franciscan monastery.
