Crosia

The beautiful town of Crosia

Crosia is a town located in the province of Cosenza, and has a population of around 9700 inhabitants. It is famous thanks to the district of Mirto Crosia, which in 2015 was awarded the Blue Flag for its beaches, an important European recognition conferred by the Foundation for Environmental Education. However, this beautiful location has long been underestimated and confused with the name of the district, Mirto.

The history of Crosia

Crosia has a long history that dates back to 1315 BC, when Aeneas' companions landed there. The original name of Crosia, Kreusa, was inspired by Aeneas' wife. Over the centuries, it has become an important border city, key for controlling the port of Illias. It has suffered numerous earthquakes and violent battles, but has always managed to rise again. Crosia was ruled by 33 feudal lords, including the Matteo, the Cariati, and the Sambiase families. The territory was highly coveted and contested by the most powerful houses of the Kingdom of Naples.

The monuments of Crosia

Crosia boasts several places of interest, including numerous ancient churches. The Matrice church is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and is administered by Father Salvatore Spataro. The church of Saint John the Baptist is located in the district of Mirto and is administered by Father Giuseppe Ruffo. The Madonna della Pietà church, also known as "Mother of Sorrows", dates back to the 16th century and is administered by Rector Giuseppe De Simone. Other interesting churches include the church of the Annunciation, the church of the Divine Heart of Jesus, the church of Saint Francis, and the chapel of Saint Anthony.

The beauty of Mirto Crosia

The district of Mirto Crosia deserves a special mention for the beauty of its landscapes and beaches. Thanks to the Blue Flag for its beaches, it has earned the fame it deserves. However, the historic center of Crosia is equally suggestive, although depopulated due to the decentralization caused by the district on the coast. Despite this, Crosia maintains an undeniable charm and an important history that is worth knowing.

Conclusions

Crosia is a location that deserves to be discovered and appreciated for its beauty and history. Its cultural heritage is vast and fascinating, especially for history and architecture enthusiasts. If you are looking for a place to spend your summer vacation, Crosia is the ideal destination: you can enjoy the crystal-clear sea and the warmth of the locals in an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquility.
