Crocefieschi
Welcome to Crocefiéschi
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a small Italian municipality located in the metropolitan city of Genoa, in Liguria. I'm talking about Crocefiéschi, a charming village with only 523 residents located in the high Scrivia valley, between the valleys of the Seminella, Vobbia and Brevenna streams, in the heart of the Antola Regional Nature Park.
Physical Geography
The territory of Crocefiéschi is a true spectacle for nature lovers and those who enjoy breathtaking landscapes. The peaks of the mountains Schigonzo, Castello, Biurca Nord, Anchise and Bric delle Ciappe stand majestically on the horizon, offering unforgettable panoramic views. The historic center of the village stands on the ridge between the valleys of the Seminella and Vobbia streams.
History
Like every respectable Italian village, Crocefiéschi has an ancient and fascinating history. In medieval times, the Croceviese territory was a crossroads for caravans traveling between the Ligurian coast and the Po Valley. For this reason, the village was called Crux, which means "cross" in Latin. In 1733, the name of the town was changed to Crocefiéschi to honor the Fieschi family, lords of the place since 1253.
The village was first mentioned in the 11th century when the bishops of the diocese of Tortona built a castle on the mountain behind the village. After being under the rule of the Marquisate of Gavi and the diocese of Tortona, in the 12th century it passed under the control of the Malaspina family at the will of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. At the end of the 13th century, it was acquired by the Fieschi, who held it until the abolition of the imperial fiefs by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797.
The Reopasso Revolt
One of the most fascinating moments in the history of Crocefiéschi was the Reopasso Revolt, which occurred during the French domination. French soldiers trying to occupy the village were hindered by rebels led by a certain Cavero, who had occupied the territory of Rocche del Reopasso. The situation was only resolved when Antonio De Ferrari, a supporter of Napoleon, led the soldiers through the paths of Reopasso, taking the rebels and Austrian soldiers who guarded the village by surprise. The village was looted, the feudal houses devastated, and the rebels executed in the Braia forest, now a holiday destination.
