Credaro
Welcome to Credaro: a brief history of the town
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Credaro, a municipality in the province of Bergamo, located in Valcalepio. The town has ancient origins, dating back to the Bronze Age! Thanks to the discovery of jewelry and household items, the existence of primitive human settlements in this area of Lombardy has been proven.
During the Roman Empire, the town continued to develop, so much so that a vicus, a group of houses and land, called "Cretarium," was built there. Land reclamation then led to the creation of a very important road network, which also included the famous Via Francesca, used for military reasons.
But the period of greatest fervor for the town was undoubtedly the medieval period. In the 10th century, the village was under the Martinengo family's control, then handed over to the municipality of Bergamo in 1122. Subsequently, the Calepio counts subjected the village and surrounding areas until the arrival of Napoleon Bonaparte in the 19th century.
Now the town is famous for the stone that bears its name, used in construction. And if you come to visit us, I recommend that you do not miss some places of interest related to the Middle Ages!
Places of interest in Credaro
Let's start with the Castle of Trebecco, dating back to the 10th century. Built for the Martinengo counts, it has a triangular plan and is located on a small rocky height. Even today, it is possible to admire it as a medieval citadel, with small courtyards and streets within the walls.
Not far away, there is also the Church of San Fermo and Rustico, built in the 12th century in perfect Romanesque style. It has a tall bell tower with three orders of bifores and is surrounded by cultivated fields, giving it a very suggestive atmosphere.
Finally, there is the Church of San Giorgio Martire, the parish church dedicated to Saint George. Built in the sixteenth century, it has a very beautiful facade, and some frescoes have been found inside, including the "Nativity and Saints Rocco and Sebastian" by Lorenzo Lotto!
Conclusions
In short, Credaro is a town with ancient history and rich in places of interest related to the Middle Ages. If you are in the area, do not miss the opportunity to visit them and immerse yourself in the history of this beautiful municipality in Lombardy. We are waiting for you!
