Creazzo
Welcome to Creazzo
Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Creazzo, a small municipality in the province of Vicenza in Veneto, Italy. With just over 11,000 inhabitants, Creazzo is a thriving place located west of Vicenza. The part of the municipal territory that extends into the plain houses most of the population, while the hilly area, which occupies just over half of the surface, includes places renowned for the production of small and tasty figs, and the famous Broccolo fiolaro di Creazzo.
Physical geography
The surface of Creazzo extends over a vast area that includes both the plain and some hilly areas. Most of the population lives in the plain, while the hilly area is famous mainly for the production of figs and the Broccolo fiolaro di Creazzo. The hilly part extends from the north of Colle Beccodoro to Colle Pizzamerlo and Colle Vento, including places such as Rivella, Fusine, Vigne and Campignardi.
Origin of the name
The name Creazzo is attested from the 5th century or the beginning of the 6th century in Latin as "Credacium", and a document from 1068 indicates it as "Credacio". The name should be a geonym derived from "creta" and "cretaceum", that is "chalky soil". Other ancient names include the aforementioned "Credacium" in Latin and "Gredatz" in German.
History
Creazzo has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but it is during the Roman period that the area was drained and provided with roads starting from a "statio" placed on the Via Postumia. After the Lombard domination, around the year 1000 the population of the plain was forced to move to the hilly areas due to the continuous floods and invasions of the Hungarians. Here the so-called "old town" was built around the castle of the Diocese of Vicenza, the nearby and powerful city to which Creazzo had been subject since Roman times.
In 1130 the old fortress was destroyed by the Vicenza bishop Henry in his struggle with the nobles of his city.
Conclusions
I hope you enjoyed this brief excursion to Creazzo. If you ever find yourself in the area, do not hesitate to visit this small pearl of Veneto. You will be immersed in the typical hilly landscapes of the area and you can taste the local products of which we are particularly proud.
