Discovering the Ghost Town of Craco
Craco is an Italian municipality located in the province of Matera, in Basilicata. Its historic center is known for being a real ghost town, with its population of only 630 inhabitants. In 1963, a landslide began causing a depopulation, rendering it abandoned in the early 1980s. Despite this unusual characteristic, Craco has become a popular tourist destination for those who want to explore the ghost town.
Physical Geography
Located in the hilly area that precedes the Lucanian Apennines, Craco stands at about 390 meters above sea level. Its position on the top of a hill makes it a strategic location to admire the surrounding landscape. The town is halfway between the mountains and the sea, and is surrounded by Calanco, deep furrows carved into the chalky hills. The neighboring municipalities are Pisticci, Montalbano Jonico, Stigliano, San Mauro Forte, and Ferrandina.
History
Foundation
The first historical evidence of Craco dates back to the 8th century BC, when some tombs were found. During the Byzantine era, the city became a settlement and a strategic point for agriculture. In 1060, the territory was placed under the authority of Archbishop Arnaldo of Tricarico, who called it Graculum, meaning "small plowed field."
Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, Craco was important for its strategic military position and its fortifications, including the Norman Tower, built in the 13th century. In 1276, it became a "universitas" and the city expanded around the four main palaces, including the Palazzo Maronna and the Palazzo Grossi.
Collapse
In the 1960s, the city began to experience a depopulation due to a landslide, which continued to cause damage until the 1980s. The inhabitants were forced to abandon the city, making it a real ghost town.
