Costabissara: the city in the outskirts of Vicenza

Hello friends! Today I will talk about Costabissara, a city with a population of about 7,682 inhabitants, located in the province of Vicenza, in the Veneto region. It is part of the hinterland, i.e. the area around the city of Vicenza.

Physical geography

The territory of Costabissara has an altitude of 51 meters above sea level and is located at the foot of the Bissaresi hills, the end part of the Prealps and the Southern Vicentini Lessini Mountains. The Pignare Mountain, with the famous Lombard church of San Giorgio and the cemetery, is located in the adjacent hills. The city is bathed by the Orolo river and several canals and ditches for water purposes.

Origin of the name

The original name of the city was Costa Fabrica or Costa Favrega, indicating the presence of numerous quarries of stone, limestone, and marble used to build the Roman aqueduct of Vicenza. It was later renamed Costabissara when it passed to the Bissari Counts' possession.

History

There are no findings that attest to the human presence in Costabissara before the Bronze Age. However, a large amount of pottery dating back to the Bronze Age was found on Mount Pignare, indicating the presence of a tribe of about 30 individuals.

Historical notes

The city of Costabissara has a very ancient history. In 1184, the City of Vicenza bought the city for about 1,000 soldi. In 1233, the Archbishop of Ravenna granted permission to found the church of San Giorgio on Mount Pignare. In 1429, Costabissara passed under the dominion of the Serenissima Republic of Venice.

Over the centuries, the city has undergone many transformations. During the Napoleonic period, monastery assets and church property were confiscated. In 1866, Costabissara was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Economy

Costabissara's economy is mainly based on agriculture. The city produces cereals, fruits, and vegetables, and is particularly known for its cherry production. In addition to agriculture, the area is renowned for its textile industries.
