This municipality in the province of Bergamo, with its 876 inhabitants, is located in the Serina Valley, about thirty kilometers north of Bergamo, and is part of the Brembana Valley Mountain Community. In this text we will tell you about the history of the town, its monuments, and its fractions and districts, all waiting to be discovered!
History: from its origins to the rebirth
The origins of Costa Serina date back to the 1st century BC, during the Roman Empire, when the Serina Valley was under the municipality of Bergamo. However, the first written documents attesting to the existence of the town date back to 1186 when the Bishop of Bergamo granted some privileges to the residents of the area through the priest of the village.
During the Middle Ages, the town became important in the context of the Serina Valley. At that time, it was called "Costa di Sambusita" and was one of the first municipalities to regulate itself with a communal statute. The villages of Sambusita and Rigosa were also included in the municipality, which later joined the municipality of Algua. In the fifteenth century, the town took on its current name, Costa Serina.
During the fascist period, the town joined the neighboring municipalities of Bracca and Algua, forming the new municipality of "Bracca di Costa Serina". Only in 1961, the towns separated definitively, maintaining their denominations and territorial conformations.
After years of depopulation, the town is experiencing a new phase of splendor thanks to tourism, both in summer and winter.
Monuments and places of interest
Church of San Lorenzo (Costa Serina)
The parish church of the capital, dedicated to Saints Lorenzo and Ambrogio, was built in the eighteenth century to replace a twelfth-century place of worship. Inside, it is possible to admire numerous works of art, including a fifteenth-century fresco depicting Saints Marta and Lucia. This fresco was found during recent restoration work and was created by Maffiolo da Cazzano or his workshop. The church is a place of reflection and peace, perfect for those who want to get away from the daily hustle and bustle.
