Costa Masnaga

Discovering Costa Masnaga

Welcome to Costa Masnaga, a municipality in the province of Lecco in Lombardy, Italy. With its population of 4,775 inhabitants, the town offers significant examples of ancient and modern history, making it a particularly interesting place to visit.

History

Human activity dating back to prehistoric times is evidenced by the remains of palafitte found in Lake Pusiano. In medieval times, the territory of Costa Masnaga was characterized by numerous fortifications, such as the Tower of Camisasca, dating back to 1000 AD and built to defend against the frequent raids of the Hungarians. The settlement of Tregolo also developed around a castle, which was destroyed in 1556. In the 17th century, the plague severely affected the population. In 1757, the ancient municipality of Costa Masnaga was merged with the nearby Tregolo, and later with Brenno della Torre and Centemero, to form the present-day municipality of Costa Masnaga.

Economy

The town played a fundamental role in textile production. Over the years, silk processing has been consolidated and expanded, assuming significant proportions. Alongside silk, the production of fabrics made from other fibers such as cotton also emerged. For this reason, the municipality was given the title of "City of Textiles", which is still a point of pride for the community today.

Symbols

The symbol of Costa Masnaga is represented by the municipal coat of arms, granted in 1930, which depicts the tower of Tregolo and the ruins of the ancient castle. The flag, instead, is a blue canvas, granted in 1959.
