Cossombrato: a journey through its history, symbols, society, infrastructure, and administration

Welcome to Cossombrato, a town in Piedmont with a long and fascinating history. In this text, I will guide you through the various aspects that characterize this locality, starting from its history.

History

Cossombrato has ancient origins and in the Middle Ages was owned by the Dioceses of Asti. In 1290, it was the scene of the struggle between Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1320, the Pelletta family built a castle, in which they took refuge during the period of fighting against the Solaro family. The most important structures of the imposing castle remain, although they have been partly renovated in various subsequent periods. The church of San Rocco, instead, dates back to 1700 and was built to eradicate the plague of the epizootic aphtha.

Cossombrato: history, symbols, society, infrastructure and administration.

Symbols

The rampant lion in the coat of arms of Cossombrato represents the Pelletta family, noble Asti bankers, owners of Asti houses in Valle d'Aosta and Savoia, and feudatories of Cossombrato.

Society

The population of Cossombrato has significantly decreased in the last hundred years, from 1,045 inhabitants in 1921 to the current 521. This could be mainly due to a demographic decline and emigration.

Infrastructure and transportation

The Chiusano-Cossombrato station was activated in 1912 on the Chivasso-Asti railway route, whose operation was definitively interrupted in 2011. Cossombrato was also served by the Asti-Cortanze tramway between 1882 and 1915.
