Cossoine
Welcome to Cossoine!
Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about a small town in northern Sardinia: Cossoine. Just 48 km from Sassari and 60 km from Alghero, Cossoine is a place worth visiting if you love history and nature. With its 762 inhabitants, this town is part of Meilogu, a sub-region of Logudoro.
The History of Cossoine
The territory of Cossoine has been inhabited since ancient times. There are several testimonies of human presence, such as the domus de janas and the tombs of giants dating back to the Bronze Age, and the nuraghi. Later, the Romans also left their mark with the city of Lucentia. In the Middle Ages, Cossoine was part of the Torres judicate and later passed to the Genoese family of Doria. In the fourteenth century, the municipality ended up in the hands of the Aragonese and was then controlled by various families of Iberian feudal lords until the abolition of feudalism in 1839. During the Middle Ages, Cossoine was famous for its hostility to spiritual authority, and Catholicism was mainly practiced by the families of the upper classes, while the popular masses adhered to a distorted cult with superstitions and remnants of pagan cults. The territory of the province of Sassari was one of the wildest, rich in forests and marshy valleys that made Cossoine the ideal refuge for local bandits, such as the Cabizza brothers from the village itself, Peppino Marceddu from Pozzomaggiore, and other fugitives, such as the infamous Francesco Derosas from Usini.
Cossoine Today
Today, Cossoine is a quieter and more peaceful municipality, thanks to the progress of communications that has brought it to a certain degree of economic and social development. The municipality is far from the phenomenon of kidnapping for extortion purposes, which has instead increased along with economic development, and nature is viewed with a certain respect due to the scarcity of forests following deforestation to build a railway.
Tourist attractions
If you love history, I recommend visiting the Byzantine church of Santa Maria Iscalas, which represents the beginning of the history of Cossoine. In addition, it is possible to visit the numerous nuraghi and tombs of giants present in the territory.
If, on the other hand, you prefer nature, you must absolutely go to the nearby mountains to admire the panoramic view of the municipality and its surroundings. You can also take a walk in the Fluvial Park of Porto Mannu, located in the valley of the Rio Mannu, where you can admire the unique natural landscape of the area.
Finally, if you love photography, you can visit the Casteldoria Lake, which is not exactly in Cossoine but a short distance away, and is one of the most beautiful places on the island. The images that can be captured in this place are breathtaking!
Conclusions
I assure you that Cossoine is a special place where you can relax, have fun and enjoy the natural landscape and history of the place. If you decide to visit it, you won't regret it!
