The municipality is located in the upper valley of the Arroscia stream, less than 20 kilometers from the French border, and is surrounded by the Ligurian Alps. The municipal territory is characterized by the northern and eastern sectors of the Tanarello valley and a section of the adjacent Negrone valley (stream), which flow through the two main source branches of the Tanaro. Among other natural attractions, the waterfalls of the Arroscia stream are a must-see for anyone visiting the area. In addition, the municipal territory hosts a portion of the Navette forest, an extensive conifer forest located at an average altitude of 1600 meters and in the Ligurian Alps Regional Natural Park since 2007.

The municipality of Cosio, from a minimum altitude of 420 m above sea level to a maximum altitude of 1906 m above sea level, boasts a great forest variety that includes riparian vegetation, thermophilic, mesophilic, pure and mixed beech forests, and high-altitude and subalpine coniferous forests. In the summit ridge of the Alpe di Cosio and Pianocavallo, the casmophytic vegetation adds additional charm to the territory. In the southeastern sector of the municipal territory, sub-Mediterranean formations with Pinus pinaster or oak and Fraxinus ornus can also be appreciated, with the presence of thermophilic species such as Pistacia terebinthus and Rhus coriaria.
