Sant'ippolito
Sant'Ippolito: a hillside oasis
Hi everyone! Today I will talk to you about Sant'Ippolito, a hamlet of the municipality of Cosenza located southeast of the city, on a hill belonging to the geographic area of Presila.
History
The history of Sant'Ippolito is linked to the raids of the Saracens who devastated Cosenza in the 10th century, pushing the city's inhabitants to take refuge to the south and create several Casale, including Sant'Ippolito. The town has also been hit by various earthquakes, including the one that occurred in 1854. Until the end of the 19th century, it was part of the municipality of Pietrafitta together with the hamlet of Torzano, now Borgo Partenope, and was then incorporated into the municipality of Cosenza.
Monuments
If you visit Sant'Ippolito, you cannot miss these monuments:
- The Sanctuary of Sant'Ippolito, dedicated to the Roman martyr from whom the village takes its name. It has recently been restored and is of ancient construction, although what can be seen today dates back to the late 19th century/early 20th century. Among the works inside, there are various paintings and the ancient statue of the saint.
- The church of Santa Lucia Vergine and Martire, which has also been recently restored. It is located in piazza A. Dionisio and is the place where some processional statues of the 19th/20th centuries are kept.
- La Conicella, located along the road to Cosenza, in the Contrada Feudo. Here you can admire some devotional images.
Festivals
In the village, two important festivals are celebrated:
- The feast of Sant'Ippolito, on August 13th and March 8th, in honor of the patron saint of the village.
- The feast of Santa Lucia, on December 13th, which also gives its name to the parish of Sant'Ippolito.
