Cosenza Calcio: the football team of Cosenza

Hello friends, today we are going to talk about Cosenza Calcio, the football team of the city of Cosenza. The club was founded on November 18, 1912 and has been playing its matches at the San Vito-Gigi Marulla Stadium since 1964. Currently, they play in Serie B, the second tier of the Italian football league, and have already participated in this category 24 times.

History

Cosenza Calcio: The story of the Calabrian team.

Origins

The history of football in Cosenza dates back a long time, even to 1908 when the game of round ball was introduced to the city. Then, after several local teams were formed and dissolved, Fortitudo was founded in 1912, the first real football team in Cosenza. However, it was only in 1926 that Cosenza Football Club was founded and the city began to be represented in the national football scene.

The fight against fascism

One of the most important moments in Cosenza's history is the fight against fascism. In 1928, the club transformed into Dopolavoro Sportivo Cosenza for political reasons imposed by the fascist regime, but this did not please the management and fans of the team. So, they founded Cosenza Sport Club, which participated in the Third Division Championship of 1928-29. However, the regime transformed Dopolavoro into Associazione Sportiva Fascista Cosenza, winning the Third Division Championship but without being promoted to the Second Division.

Successes of Cosenza Calcio

After a long series of placings and classifications in Serie B and the various categories of Italian football, Cosenza was able to win an IV Series in 1958, an Anglo-Italian Cup in 1983 and a Lega Pro Italian Cup in 2014-2015, becoming the first and only Calabrian team to win a national trophy. The highest result in Serie B was achieved in 1991-1992, when the club finished fifth in the standings, just two points away from promotion to the top flight.

San Vito-Gigi Marulla Stadium

Since 1964, Cosenza has been playing their home matches at the San Vito-Gigi Marulla Stadium, which can accommodate 24,209 spectators. The stadium is named after the city's patron saint, San Vito, and the club's president, Gigi Marulla. Over the years, the stadium has been renovated and expanded to improve the quality of the fan experience.

Conclusions

In summary, the history of Cosenza Calcio is a long-standing one, in which the team has had to face various difficulties and challenges, such as the fight against fascism. However, the club has been able to achieve some important successes in its history, such as the Anglo-Italian Cup and the Lega Pro Italian Cup. Now, the team plays in Serie B and is ready to continue fighting to achieve new goals. Forza Cosenza!
