Colfosco

Discover Colfosco, the pearl of the Dolomites

Colfosco, also known as Calfosch in Ladin language, is a hamlet of the municipality of Corvara in Badia, a higher inhabited village of Alta Badia that represents an important tourist center in the heart of the Dolomites. This charming location is located at the foot of the massif of the Sella Group and of the Puez-Odle Natural Park, on the road that leads from Corvara to the Gardena Pass towards the Val Gardena.

History

Colfosco has an interesting history to discover. In 1153, the Count of Sabiona acquired Colfosco from the abbot of San Candido, and the locality seems to have initially been only a pasture. But as time passed, seasonal inhabitants began to settle there, not only during the summer. The first farms in Colfosco were owned by noble families.

While historical records of Corvara date only to 1292 and it belonged at that time to the ancient lordship of Val Badia, and was part of the jurisdiction of Marebbe, there are certain traces of Colfosco that date back a century and a half earlier, precisely from the year 1153, and the settlement was already part of the jurisdiction of Selva di Val Gardena since 1296, as well as of the bishop of Bressanone.

Since it was part of the parish of Laion, the people of Colfosco went to mass in the parish church of that village and brought their dead there for burial. In 1419 a chapel was consecrated in the present historic settlement to St. Vigilio, and at that time Colfosco passed to the parish of Santa Cristina. In 1680 Colfosco was definitively separated from Laion and joined the parish of Pieve di Livinallongo, and in 1827 passed to the jurisdiction of Marebbe, to which Corvara had always belonged.
