Cortino
Welcome to Cortino: a commune immersed in Abruzzo's nature
Hello everyone! Today I am taking you on a journey to discover a small Italian commune immersed in the pristine nature of Abruzzo: Cortino. This village of only 583 inhabitants is located in the province of Teramo and is part of the Gran Sasso National Park. But let's get into the details...
The Coat of Arms of Cortino
Let's start by saying that the coat of arms of the Cortino commune was created from the figures present in the old seal of the "Rocca Roseti" Universitas. The main figure is an Italian-style mountain with three adjacent peaks, the median of which (the highest) is green in color. In the lower part of the coat of arms, there is a golden tower walled in black, with a silver rose with green foliage on the right. The ornaments consist of tree branches tied with a red ribbon.
The Geography of Cortino
The territory of Cortino is located at the foot of the Monti della Laga, a wide mountain range with beech forests and extensive meadows that have been used for grazing sheep and other livestock for centuries. Near Cortino, remnants of white fir forests can still be found, as well as numerous protected floral species, including the famous St. John's Lily. Furthermore, thanks to the protection measures of the National Park, it has been possible to reintroduce some animal species, such as wolves and wild boars, while others, such as some deer species, are being reintroduced.
The History of Cortino
The Cortino commune was established in 1813-1816 as part of a project to reorganize the territorial districts of the Kingdom, following the division of the vast "Roseto State" area. The Universitas of Cortino was part of the province of Teramo and included about 29 villages over a vast territory that extended from Montorio al Vomano to Rocca Santa Maria.
Cortino has undergone changes to its territory over the years, such as the annexation of some fractions in 1868. In 2013, the Commune was a member of the Laga Mountain Community, but after its suppression, in 2014, Cortino became part of the union of mountain communes of Laga.
Places to Visit in Cortino
Although small, Cortino has some places of interest that are worth a visit. Firstly, the capital of the commune is located on a natural amphitheater created by Monte Bilanciere, one of the few places in the Apennines where pure fir forests can still be found. Furthermore, the village is crossed by the Vomano River, which offers beautiful panoramic views and is ideal for a relaxing walk. But the real reason to visit Cortino is the immersion in nature, with opportunities for excursions and trekking on the Monti della Laga, bringing you closer to unique flora and fauna.
Conclusions
So, here is the presentation of Cortino, a commune immersed in the nature of Abruzzo. I hope I have conveyed to you the beauty and charm of this unique place, where it is possible to disconnect from the frenzy of the city and reconnect with nature. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing place for your next vacation, Cortino could be just what you are looking for!
