Cortenuova: history, attractions and culture of Bergamo village.

History

Antiquity

The territory of Cortenuova has been inhabited since Roman times, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds discovered over the years. You will find remains of villae rusticae, tombs, votive inscriptions, and an altar dedicated to Minerva. This makes Cortenuova one of the richest historical towns in the entire province of Bergamo.

Early Middle Ages

The birth of Cortenuova is due to the Lombards, who invaded northern Italy in 568. The Curtis, a village at the center of a large estate, had significant development in the Carolingian era, being located along the important artery that connected Milan directly to Brescia. It was used as a stopping point by Frankish kings traveling between France and the Venetian Republic. It was first mentioned in a privilege granted by Abbot Winibald of the Bobbio Abbey, from Charlemagne's son Carloman, king of Italy and Bavaria, in 877. The "curtis" of Cortenova, property of the Frankish king, was one of the most important "curtis regiae" of the Bergamo area.

Change of Ownership

Cortenuova ceased to be a curtis regia in the 10th century, when it passed into the hands of various feudal lords. In 915, the owner at the time, Count Didone di Vidalengo, swapped Cortenuova and its entire property (about 20,000 hectares) with the bishop of Bergamo. Bishop Ambrogio II da Martinengo had a castle built there in the early years of the year 1000 and then passed it on in fief to his family. It was the Bergamo bishops who erected the castle church of Sant'Alessandro just outside the walls of the castle.

Attractions

Church of Sant'Alessandro

The Church of Sant'Alessandro, located just outside the walls of the castle, is an imposing structure that stands out for its medieval architecture. This place of worship dates back to the 9th century and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. The oldest part is the Romanesque bell tower, built shortly after the year 1000. Inside the church, you can admire valuable works of art, including frescoes and paintings by local artists.

Cortenuova Castle

The Cortenuova Castle was built in the year 1000 at the behest of the Bishop of Bergamo, Ambrogio da Martinengo. This imposing structure stands on a hill, dominating the entire village of Cortenuova. The castle, which in the Middle Ages was a center of commercial exchanges and military activities, was used as a private residence from the 14th century until the early 1900s. Today, you can visit the ruins of the castle and enjoy the splendid panoramic view of the valley below.

Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows

The Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows, located in the hamlet of Spineto, dates back to the 17th century and has been completely renovated over the years. The church is famous for the presence of numerous works of art inside, including a statue of the Madonna of Sorrows and paintings by local artists.
