History of Cortanze
The three silver wheels on a red background are the symbol of the Roero family, which had control of the region for several centuries. The city is located on the Roero hills, where the Roero family had their castle and ruled the area.
Population of Cortanze
In the last hundred years, the population of the municipality has decreased drastically. Starting from 1911, when the population reached its historical maximum of 584 people, Cortanze has seen a 50% reduction in population due to emigration of people in search of new opportunities.
Infrastructure and Transport
Between 1882 and 1915, the city of Cortanze was served by the Asti-Cortanze tramway, which was later closed. In 1889, a public transport service was inaugurated connecting Cortanze to Asti, with four daily trips lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. However, today, the city is poorly served by public transport, so most people use cars or bicycles to get around.
