Physical geography
Magrè is located in the area between Oltradige and Bassa Atesina. In the municipal territory, we also find the beautiful lake of Favogna, an ideal place to spend a day outdoors. Don't miss a walk through the vineyards of the area, which offer a unique spectacle in every season.
Etymology
The name Magrè probably derives from the German terms "Margrid" and "Margreit," first used in documents in 1292. However, the toponym is already attested as "Margretum" in 1181. The Italian name of "Magrè" was officially adopted in 1215. Until 1971, the municipality was called "Magrè all'Adige/Margreid."
History
Magrè has an ancient and fascinating history, which can be reconstructed through the many monuments present in the area. It was first mentioned in 1181 with the name "Margretum." Over the centuries, it has been an integral part of various jurisdictions and, since 1914, has been part of the province of Bolzano. Don't miss the new fire department headquarters, built inside the walls of Favogna by two young architects.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the municipality of Magrè is the emblem of the Ob der Platten family, who lived in the village until 1511. The coat of arms has been used as a seal since 1780 and was adopted on November 7, 1968.
Monuments and places of interest
Magrè is a real treasure trove of historical monuments and places of interest. The Church of Santa Geltrude, built in 1618, was erected on the site of the old parish church from the 14th century. The Church Tower, on the other hand, was raised in 1513-14. In Favogna di Sotto, we also find the Church of San Leonardo.
Society
The municipality of Magrè has a population of about 1272 inhabitants, the majority of whom are German-speaking. In the 1900 census, 24% of the population spoke Italian.
Demographic evolution
The 2011 census records a population of 1234 inhabitants, a slight decrease compared to the previous census of 2001.
Infrastructure and transportation
Magrè is situated along the Wine Road of Alto Adige, a tourist route that crosses the countryside of the region and the wine cellars of the local wineries. It is also possible to travel the Oltradige cycle path, which provides an immersive nature experience. The municipality also has the Magrè-Cortaccia railway station, on the Brenner Railway.

The community of Magrè is currently administered by Mayor Gottfried Rainer.
