The province of Macerata
Hello friends! Today I'll talk to you about the province of Macerata, one of the provinces of the Marche region in Italy. The province has a population of 303684 inhabitants with its capital in Macerata.
Physical geography
The province of Macerata is the largest in the Marche region since 2009, with an area of . To the east is the Adriatic Sea, while to the west it borders the Umbria region (Perugia province). It is the only province in Marche that borders three other provinces within the same region: Ancona to the north, Ascoli Piceno to the southwest, and Fermo to the south. The jurisdiction of Macerata also extends beyond the Umbrian-Marche Apennine watershed to the territories of the Valnerina (Visso). It is mostly a hilly area, with 67.7% of the territory being hills, while the rest is mountains. There are three mountain community unions: Unione Montana Potenza Esino Musone, Unione Montana Marca di Camerino, and Unione Montana dei Monti Azzurri.
History
The province comes from the homonymous delegation of Macerata of the State of the Church, which in 1860 the Minghetti decree extended by annexing the delegation of Camerino and the municipality of Visso. Over the years, it had undergone numerous territorial modifications, particularly cessions in favor of the province of Ancona. In 1929, it received the municipality of Visso from the province of Perugia.
Economy
The economy of the province of Macerata, like that of the Marche region in general, features many small but highly specialized companies. In particular, the footwear sector is relevant. In 2006, the Bank of the Province of Macerata was established.
Infrastructure and transport
Before the advent of the automobile, the province of Macerata was crossed by historic roads leading to Rome. The most important was the Via Lauretana (Umbria-Marche), which entered Marche from Foligno, through the Plateau of Colfiorito and Serravalle di Chienti, and headed towards the sanctuary of the Holy House in Loreto and then to the port of Ancona. With the arrival of trains, the Rome-Ancona railway through the Valico di Fossato di Vico-Fabriano-Vall'Esina made it unlikely to realize a direct railway artery between the capital and the province of Macerata. However, a line was built that separated from Albacina, just after Fabriano, towards Ancona and arrived in Civitanova Marche, passing through the Station of Macerata and other important cities in the province. Camerino was connected to the railway in Castelraimondo with the Castelraimondo-Camerino railway, which is now dismantled and replaced by the bus service.
In summary, the province of Macerata is the largest in the Marche region and is in an ideal geographical position, with the sea and mountains offering many tourist opportunities. The economy is characterized by many small and excellent quality specialized companies. We hope this summary has been useful and that you have discovered something new about the province of Macerata!
