Discovering Bosco di Corniglio

Bosco di Corniglio is a charming hamlet in the municipality of Corniglio, in the province of Parma, located at an altitude of 842 meters above sea level. The village is located on a glacial promontory on the left of the Parma river. Its particular geographical position offers a splendid panorama of the valley below.

The history of Bosco di Corniglio

The village's history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it arose around the Castle of Bosco di Corniglio, built at the confluence of the Parma river and the Costa river. The first mention of Bosco dates back to 1216, when Armanno da Cornazzano sold his properties in the jurisdiction of the village to the bishop of Parma, Obizzo Fieschi.

In 1370, the castle passed to the Rossi family of Parma, under whom it was fortified during the wars between the Rossis and the Terzis of Parma. In 1409, the castle's tower was conquered by the Terzis, but their domain was then supplanted by the Fieschis. In 1512, the castle was conquered by Filippo Maria de' Rossi, already lord of Corniglio, and was restructured. However, upon Filippo Maria's death, the castle fell into ruin and was seized by the Ducal Chamber in 1593.

During the Second World War, Bosco di Corniglio was an important center of partisan resistance. In September 1944, the Unified Operational Command (CUO) of the Resistance was transferred to Bosco to reinforce the partisan presence on the eastern slope of the Cisa. However, on October 17, 1944, an enemy column led by a spy eliminated the CUO, causing the death of six partisans. The Ghirardini hotel, which housed the CUO, was set on fire.
