Corniglio: history and nature in the Appennino Park.

Here is the physical geography of Corniglio

Surroundings

Corniglio is located at the end of Emilia, near the border with Tuscany. This makes it particularly interesting for those who want to visit both the sea (it is only 85 km from Cinque Terre) and the ski resorts of Schia (25 km away) and Prato Spilla (30 km away). Do not miss the Lagdei Refuge, reachable in about 15 km, which offers a breathtaking view of the Parmesan Holy Lake.

Environment

The territory of Corniglio is surrounded by the peaks of the Apennines: Monte Tavola, Monte Orsaro, Monte Fosco, Monte Marmagna, Monte Aquila (Tuscan-Emilian Apennines), Monte Aquilotto, Monte Brusa, Monte Paitino, and Monte Braiola. In addition, you will find numerous lakes around the town: Parmesan Holy Lake, Pradaccio Lake, Lower Gemio Lake, Upper Gemio Lake, Dark Parmesan Lake, and Bicchiere Lake. For those who love hiking, there is the opportunity to follow the Parma Torrent, which originates from the Holy Lake and where three other main branches converge: Parma dei Lagoni, Parma di Badignana, and Parma delle Guadine.

The history that Corniglio tells

Legend has it that Corniglio was built by the Roman general Titus Cornelius Balbus in 71 BC to demonstrate Roman dominance over the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, where the Ligurians had lived until a century before. The town developed around the central fortress, which dominates the valleys of the Bratica and Parma torrents, thanks to its strategic position.

What to see in Corniglio

The Roman Bridge is a very ancient work of art that extends for three spans. Interesting to visit, it is an example of ancient artifact present in the town. The landslide of "La Lama" is one of the most interesting places near the town, which extends over 200.09 hectares. The four officially documented reactivations were found in 1612, 1740, 1902, and 1996, with an anonymous testimony reporting another reactivation that occurred in the 16th century.

Conclusions

Corniglio is a place to visit, both for its natural beauty and altitude, and for its millennia-old history and the testimonies of the past that can still be admired. We invite you to discover this town in the province of Parma and to savor the beauty and tranquility of country life, far from the chaos of the metropolis.
