Coriano

Welcome to Coriano! A brief historical introduction

Dear friends, today we will talk about Coriano, a municipality in the province of Rimini that will immerse you in the history and culture of Romagna. Coriano has a very interesting history dating back to the times of the Malatesta and Sassatelli families. Its privileged location, between the beaches of Rimini and Riccione and the Republic of San Marino, make it an ideal destination for a vacation full of culture and fun.

The history of Coriano

Regarding the history of Coriano, we can say that its name seems to date back to the Latin "Fondus Cornelianum". The city developed around 1440 thanks to the Malatesta family, who built an imposing castle whose crenellated tower, mighty walls, and underground caves are mostly unexplored today. Later, the castle passed into the hands of the Borgia family and the Republic of Venice.

However, the Malatesta's poor economic fortunes and their rivalry towards the Papal State brought the castle into the hands of the Sassatelli family of Imola in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Sassatelli family rebuilt the castle, inserting the family crest into the first entrance arch. Currently, the castle has been used for various purposes, such as postman and doctor homes, and even as local prisons.
