Coreglia Ligure

Discovering Coreglia Ligure

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about a small town located in the metropolitan city of Genoa, in Liguria: Coreglia Ligure. With its approximately 263 inhabitants, the municipal area is located in the Fontanabuona valley.

The physical geography of Coreglia Ligure

If you love the mountains, this is the right place for you! The territory of Coreglia Ligure is almost entirely mountainous and heights range from a minimum of 66 m in the Pian di Coreglia area to a maximum of 775 m of Mount Pegge. Among the peaks of the territory, we find Mount Rosa and Mount Perini.

Coreglia Ligure: history and mountain in Liguria

The history of the town

The name Coreglia Ligure has a Latin origin, precisely derived from the term "Corilius". The presence of the town is attested for the first time in 1034, but the toponym "Coegia" is mentioned in a diploma of 895 in favor of the abbey of San Colombano. This locality has always been a mandatory passage between the Rapallo coast and the inland of the Fontanabuona valley.

During the French period, Coreglia Ligure was included in various jurisdictions and departments. In 1815 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia and, during the 20th century, it experienced a strong emigration of its inhabitants to America.

The Camp of Coreglia Ligure

During World War II, between the localities of Pian di Coreglia and Calvari (San Colombano Certenoli), the Camp of Coreglia Ligure was built by the military engineers of the Caperana barracks in Chiavari. This structure housed around 15,000 prisoners, mainly British or Commonwealth soldiers captured in Africa.

If you are passionate about history, I recommend visiting this area, where you can still feel the atmosphere of the war and admire the works of military engineering.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Coreglia Ligure is a very small town, but full of history and beauty. If you love the mountains and nature, this is the right place to spend a relaxing vacation and discover Liguria in a different atmosphere than usual. I hope I have intrigued you enough to make you plan a visit to this special village!
