Mantignana: An Ancient Umbrian Hamlet

Hello everyone! Today, I will talk to you about Mantignana, a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Corciano in the Province of Perugia. With a population of over 2,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most populous hamlets in the territory of Corciano. Let's explore its history, monuments, economic activities and events that take place here.

History of Mantignana

The history of Mantignana dates back to the Roman era, as evidenced by the remains of a villa and an agricultural production area. The name "ana" indicates belonging to an agricultural area dating back to the medieval period. In 1038, there was a mention of a parish church of S. Maria, around which the settlement developed, and a church of S. Martino, now disappeared. In the late Middle Ages, Mantignana was fortified in two distinct castles, the "castrum Mantignane superioris" and the "castrum Mantignane inferioris." Throughout the centuries, the village has undergone many events, including the assault of the "Compagnia Bianca" in 1364, the occupation of Astorre Baglioni in 1496 and the disputes between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal State in 1479. During the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte, Mantignana became an autonomous municipality in 1798 along with Capocavallo and Migiana. With the Restoration of 1809, it was associated with the municipality of Corciano, with which it remained even after the Risorgimento.
