The history

Corchiano has a very ancient history: it was a Faliscan city, under the rule of the Farnese. Today it retains its medieval layout, with winding alleys and suggestive squares. During the Middle Ages, the Agro Falisco area experienced a period of relative tranquility, but when the Barbarians attacked Rome, Falerii, despite its powerful walls and 50 towers, was too vulnerable, so the inhabitants abandoned the city and took refuge on the preceding cliffs. In 1000 the residents then moved to Hortiano, where numerous castles were built, and the town took on this new name.

Monuments and places of interest

If you are passionate about religious architecture, in Corchiano you can admire the Church of Sant'Antonio, built in Romanesque style with tufaceous material. At the entrance, the church appears simple in appearance with a truss roof. On the left is a fresco that is too ruined to know who it represents, while on the sides, at the end of the aisles, there are two frescoes. In the center of the left aisle, there is an oil painting dated 1634, with the crucified Christ and two angels on either side, followed by an apostle, Mary Magdalene, the praying Madonna, and St. Anthony Abbot.

A little bit of curiosity

But that's not all! Did you know that Corchiano was occupied by French troops in 1798, before returning to the Apostolic Chamber until the unification of Italy in 1870? And that the castles built in the town over the centuries constituted a defensive circuit against enemies? Finally, know that the Farnese fortress was definitively demolished in 1979, but some stumps are still visible.

Conclusions

In short, Corchiano is the ideal place for those who love history, art, and nature! Don't forget to visit the Church of Sant'Antonio and admire the suggestive view of the Rio Fratta gorge. Ready for a trip to discover Corchiano? We're waiting for you!
