Soriano: a village in the Po Valley

Soriano is a hamlet of Corbetta, in the province of Milan, with a population of about 457 inhabitants. The village is located 2.98 km from the center of the municipality it belongs to and is characterized by a predominantly flat environment, typical of the Po Valley, with some small valleys near springs and ditches.

Physical geography

The territory of Soriano borders to the west with the hamlet of Cerello, to the south with Albairate, to the east with Cisliano and its hamlet of San Giacomo, and to the north with the locality of Stravascia. Milan, about 20 km away, is the most important center nearby, but for importance and availability of services, the nearest center is Magenta.

Geology and hydrography

The soil of Soriano is geologically composed of terraced alluvial soils and aeolian deposits, as well as travertine formed during the Pleistocene. The natural springs present in large quantities are one of the main aspects of the village and had an important economic relevance for agriculture in the past. Today they are instead one of the main attractions of the South Milan Agricultural Park. The main watercourse of the hamlet is the Boldirone spring.

Seismology

Soriano has a low seismicity and has been classified as zone 4 (low seismicity) by the Italian National Department of Civil Protection. In its history, the village has suffered from five earthquakes, the last of which was in 2013 with a magnitude of 2.4.

Climate

The climate in Soriano is continental, with cold and harsh winters, hot and humid summers, which can cause the phenomenon of "mugginess". Humidity is very high throughout the year. According to data from the nearby Milan Malpensa meteorological station and based on the reference thirty-year average (1961-1990) for the World Meteorological Organization, the average temperature of the coldest month, January, is about -4°C and that of the warmest month, July, is just over 28°C. The hamlet belongs to the E climate zone, 2563 GR/G.

In summary, Soriano is a village immersed in the Po Valley, with a predominantly flat territory and a continental type climate, but also characterized by the presence of many natural springs. Its low seismicity makes it a quiet and safe place, perfect for enjoying country life just a few steps away from the cities.
