Fossalta

Fossalta: history, places of interest, and traditions

Hello everyone, today I will talk about Fossalta, a fraction of the municipality of Copparo located in the province of Ferrara.

History

The village of Fossalta has ancient roots: the first written evidence dates back to the year 906 when the village was called Fossa alta Fundus, meaning "High Ditch Bottom". Later, in the Middle Ages, the village was mentioned in some documents attesting to the existence of the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle.

In 1570, an earthquake caused enormous damage to the religious buildings of Fossalta. It was only at the end of the sixteenth century that the Church of St. Andrew was completely restored and inaugurated by the Bishop of Ferrara, Giovanni Fontana. In the eighteenth century, the religious building underwent another restoration intervention, promoted by the parish priest Don Tedeschi.

In 2013, two seventeenth-century ossuaries were discovered inside the chapel of the Church of St. Andrew.
