St. Joseph of Cupertino: a saint with a big and wonderful heart

The story of St. Joseph of Cupertino

St. Joseph of Cupertino was born on June 17, 1603 in Copertino, near Lecce. His family was not of noble birth, but he already had a passion for religion as a child and loved to spend some of his time praying in a small chapel he created in a corner of his home. At the age of 7, he began school, but unfortunately a severe illness prevented him from continuing his studies. Despite this, young Joseph did not give up and, thanks to his faith in God and the intercession of Our Lady of Graces, he overcame the difficulties and realized his dream of becoming a priest.

The miraculous healing

At the age of 15, after a 4-year illness, Joseph was healed thanks to the intercession of Our Lady of Graces at the sanctuary of Galatone, where he had gone with his mother. This event marked his life and his faith in God became even stronger.

The extraordinary life of Saint Joseph of Cupertino.

His religious life

After his healing, Joseph continued to dedicate himself to faith and prayer. At the age of 17, he entered the Capuchin friars as an oblate and later dedicated himself to learning religious subjects to become a priest. After passing the exams successfully, he became a deacon on March 20, 1627 and was ordained a priest on March 18, 1628. For many years he lived in the sanctuary of Copertino, where he dedicated himself to prayer and charity.

Miracles and levitations

St. Joseph of Cupertino is famous for his miracles, ecstasies, and levitations. During religious celebrations, it is said that he reached ecstasy and lifted off the ground. These incredible episodes attracted the attention of the crowd, often incredulous and curious. The text notes that his very first levitation was documented on October 4, 1630.

The trial for abuse of popular credulity

Because of his levitations and ecstasies, St. Joseph of Cupertino was put on trial by the Inquisition for abuse of popular credulity. However, Joseph was fully acquitted of the charges. To shield him from public curiosity, he was transferred to very isolated convents-hermitages, including those at Assisi, Pietrarubbia, and Fossombrone.

The death of St. Joseph of Cupertino

St. Joseph of Cupertino died on September 18, 1663, in Osimo, after spending the last years of his life in total isolation, dedicating himself to prayer and meditation. Today his body is kept in the crypt of the Basilica of St. Joseph of Cupertino, in a gilded bronze urn.

In conclusion, St. Joseph of Cupertino was a saint with a big and wonderful heart, deeply devoted to the Mother of God and the Catholic Church. His life and his example of faith, humility, and love for others remain an inspiration for believers around the world.
