Conza della Campania

Welcome to Conza della Campania!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Conza della Campania, a small municipality located in the province of Avellino, in Campania. Conza della Campania has evolved from an important Irpinian center to a modern city. In this article, I will talk about the physical geography, Lake Conza, the history of the city, and the Irpinia earthquake of 1980.

Physical geography

Conza della Campania: between nature and history.

Territory

Conza della Campania is located in the beautiful valley of the Ofanto River, halfway between Lioni and Calitri. The city is easily accessible via the SS 7 Via Appia, which connects Avellino to Melfi and Barletta. In addition, Conza della Campania is linked by road to the province of Salerno through the Sella di Conza. After the earthquake of 1980, the historic town remained uninhabited and the new settlement was built at the foot of the hill on which the historic town stands.

Lake Conza

Lake Conza is an artificial reservoir created in the 1970s. The Conza dam underlies a watershed of and determines a reservoir with a useful capacity of . The reservoir is intended for multiple uses, including irrigation and, since 2013, drinking water. The southern side of the lake has been declared a WWF Lake Conza Oasis. In addition to its scenic beauty, Lake Conza also houses a rich flora and fauna.

History

The territory of Conza della Campania has a very ancient history. The territory was inhabited by populations belonging to the Oliveto-Cairano culture. Subsequently, Conza della Campania became an influential Irpinian center, having a great weight during Roman and Lombard civilization. Conza della Campania also hosted a bishopric, first and archbishopric later, but lost its importance in favor of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and Teora.

From 1811 to 1860, Conza della Campania was part of the Teora district belonging to the Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi district of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. From 1860 to 1927, during the Kingdom of Italy, Conza della Campania was part of the Teora mandate (right), belonging to the district of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi.

Irpinia earthquake of 1980

Conza della Campania suffered a severe blow from the Irpinia earthquake of 1980. The entire city was razed to the ground and the city was completely rebuilt in another location. Today, after many years, Conza della Campania has returned to shine.

In conclusion, Conza della Campania is a charming city where nature and history blend in a perfect mix. Its green territory, its millenary history, and its culture make Conza della Campania an unmissable tourist destination for anyone who wants to spend a vacation immersed in the beauty of Campania.
