Lavezzola

Lavezzola: a brief introduction

Hello friends, today we will talk about Lavezzola, a charming hamlet with about 3,000 inhabitants located in the municipality of Conselice, in the province of Ravenna. Pronounced "Lavezzóla" or "Lavzóla" in the Romagnol language, it was named in honor of the Lavezzoli counts, who built the first local church in 1500 as a family oratory.

The history of Lavezzola

The territory where Lavezzola is located has always been of great relevance since the Middle Ages. Its history dates back to 1443 when a piece of land on the right bank of the Santerno River was given as a fief to the Lavezzoli counts. For centuries, the village was part of the Pieve di San Giorgio and the county of Argenta. In 1460, the drainage work redeemed the swampy area, leading the Santerno into the Primaro River and drying the surrounding lands. In the late sixteenth century, the Lavezzoli family built a church that would become the center of the village, and in 1609 it was elected parish. In 1620, the fief passed to the Bolognese Bentivoglio family, who provided durable embankments to protect the village against floods from the Santerno. In 1814, Lavezzola was incorporated into the nearby municipality of Conselice, where it remains today.
