Ascoli Calcio 1898 FC, simply known as Ascoli, is a well-known Italian football team based in Ascoli Piceno, Marche. With 123 years of history, Ascoli is one of the oldest clubs in Italy. Currently, it plays in the second division of Italian football, also known as Serie B. In this article, we will talk about its history, successes and its most iconic players.

Origins

Ascoli Calcio was founded on November 1, 1898, but the news was made public only on June 2, 1901. The founders, twelve young people from Ascoli, named the society in memory of Candido Augusto Vecchi. The club began its activities with various disciplines, such as football and cycling. However, only after the First World War, football began to ignite passions in the city of Ascoli Piceno. In 1921, the Unione Sportiva Ascolana was established, a society chaired by journalist Giuseppe Secondo Squarcia.

Successes

Ascoli has been one of the most famous clubs in the Marche region throughout its history. It achieved fourth place in Serie A in 1979-1980, its best placement. The club's most successful period took place during the presidency of Costantino Rozzi, from 1968 to 1994. During this period, Ascoli won two Serie B championships and two Serie C championships, a New Year's Tournament and a Serie C Super Cup. It also participated in the Coppa Italia 49 times. In international field, the club won the Mitropa Cup and reached the final of the Anglo-Italian Cup.

In terms of the all-time Serie A rankings, Ascoli ranks 31st since its initiation in 1929. In the ranking of Italian sports tradition according to the criteria of the Italian Football Federation, the club ranks 34th. While in the all-time Serie B rankings, it ranks 21st.

Ascoli Calcio's social colors are black and white. However, during its history, the club has occasionally worn other color combinations, including red and blue.
