Comiziano
Beginnings: history and origin of the name
Hello friends, today I will talk about Comiziano, a town in Campania. Its history dates back to the period between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, when it was one of the numerous farmhouses in the Nola area. Its original name was "Comignano" or "Cumignano", but in 1909 it was changed to "Comiziano". It is rumored that the city owes its name to various things, such as a species of olive tree called "Cominia", or from the fact that the ancient knights of Malta (Comites) from the nearby town of Cicciano were gathered here. In reality, the most accredited theory is that the name derives from the gens Cominia, which owned a vast estate in the area.
Comiziano in the medieval period
During the Middle Ages, the hamlets of the Nola area and therefore also Comiziano had a common history with Nola, the central hub of all the villages or farmhouses built by the various settlements of Roman citizens. In 1640, the first enfeoffment of the hamlets of Nola took place, including the hamlet of Cumignano which was granted to Ladislao Sigismondo of Poland by the Viceroy of Naples. However, after only two years, they were sold to the Duke of Maddaloni for 39,000 ducats. He in turn sold them in 1643 to Giulio Mastrilli, royal counselor. Following the end of the Orsini lordship in Nola, the city became free and its hamlets acquired autonomy, giving rise to Cumignano as an autonomous center.
Symbols of Comiziano
Comiziano has a coat of arms that was approved by deliberation of the municipal council n. 82 of October 13, 1988 and granted with Presidential Decree of January 3, 1989. The gonfalon is a flag divided into blue and white.
Monuments and places of interest
If you love history, Comiziano is the right place for you. Among the major monuments of the city are the remains of the Del Balzo baronial palace and the palace and villa of the Marquis Imperial d'Afflitto. The current appearance of Comiziano recalls its medieval origins and its narrow streets and small squares are very suggestive. The parish church, built in the 1500s and erected as a parish in 1527 with a bull of the noble Giovanni Bernardo Mastrilli, is another place of interest. It has a single nave and has a bright appearance thanks to its Renaissance-style columns and capitals.
In conclusion, Comiziano is a town of ancient charm and rich history. I invite you to go on vacation there and discover the beauties of this city.
