Discovering the Municipality of Comitini in Sicily

Hello everyone, today I'll take you on a journey to discover a small Sicilian municipality: Comitini, or "Cummatì" in Sicilian. We are in the province of Agrigento and the town has approximately 855 inhabitants.

History

Comitini has a long history dating back to the Roman Empire. In fact, the area was crossed by an important communication artery and there was an ancient Roman "Statio" called "Comiciana" from which the current toponym of the territory and the municipality seems to have derived. Over the centuries, Comitini has been a land of farmers dedicated to farming the fiefdom and a flourishing industrial center, thanks to the rediscovery of sulfur mining activity in the first half of the nineteenth century. In 1859, the territory was the site of revolutionary movements and it was a group of anti-Bourbon patriots who raised the first Italian Tricolor flag as a sign of revolt and unity of the Italian people for the first time in the Agrigento area on Mount La Pietra. Over the years, Comitini became famous also thanks to the figure of the great Nobel Prize winner for literature Luigi Pirandello, who spent part of his youth there.
