Pedalino

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Pedalino, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Comiso in the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa.

The remote origins

According to prehistoric surveys, there is no concrete evidence of a stable human settlement in the area of Pedalino. The area was mainly covered by forests and flat lands, making it less suitable for the formation of stable settlements. However, during Greek colonization, the penetration of Syracuse in the area has been hypothesized.

During the 6th century BC, the area was affected by Syracuse's penetration through the Dirillo river, with the goal of reaching the southern coast of the Mediterranean. It was during this period that the internal road system passing through Pedalino was highlighted.

Historical events

In the 15th century, the area was called "Piddalinu," a term that seems to mean "toll zone." This is because Pedalino was an ideal place for collecting taxes on agricultural products such as wheat and acorns. In the 16th century, during the tenure of Count Luigi Enriquez Cabrera, land in the Chiaramonte feud was leased to obtain more profit through wheat rents.
